High School Division

Orchestra provides an opportunity for students to improve individual skills on an instrument in addition to learning to work as a team to improve ensemble skills. We will learn a variety of music from different cultures and time periods to enhance students’ playing skills as well as their musicianship and musical knowledge.

We will learn and perform a varied repertoire of music from different cultures and time periods. Between the ensemble music and the method books, students will have the opportunity to improve their individual playing skills as well as their ensemble playing skills. Students are expected to attend all rehearsals with the appropriate materials and show respectful behavior toward the other students and the teacher. Regular practice at home is expected as well and is documented with weekly practice records. Students are also required to attend our performances for the year.

High School Guitar is a two semester program: In the first semester, students learn the basics of the guitar through playing open chord voicings, barre chords, basic scales and its application to different genres. Musical knowledge is also developed through the study of basic music theory, notation, tablature reading and chord diagrams.

Second semester expands learning via the study of advanced chord progressions as it is applied in Pop, blues, country, Jazz and classical music. Students will also study major, minor and pentatonic scales, triads and 7ths chords. They will also explore improvisation and accompaniment by playing together as a large ensemble.

The main objective of this whole course is performance. Students are asked to choose three to four songs as their final recital piece for each semester, this allows them to apply everything that they have learned.

Middle School choir is divided into two sections: 6th grade Choir and Advanced Choir.

6th graders have the opportunity to experience choir as part of their regular curriculum, on opposing days to their instrumental ensembles. 7th and 8th graders choose choir as an elective. Students are exposed to a wide variety of choral genres, from hymns to folk songs, from Broadway to contemporary styles, and from classics to present day composers. Performances opportunities occur several times a year, ranging from chapels to concerts to choir share experiences with other local schools. Faith Academy is thrilled to be able to offer high quality choral instruction in order to encourage our students in making music to the glory of God.

Middle School Band is also divided into two sections: 6th grade Intermediate Band and 7th/8th grade Advanced Band. 6th grade students are challenged to apply the basics they learned in their Beginning Band to a wide range of music, including marches, hymns, folk songs and popular music. As students advance to the higher middle school grades, their repertoire level of difficulty increases along with the opportunities to perform. Advanced Band continues to develop the musicianship and quality of each student to prepare them for Concert Band in High School.

Elementary School Division

All K-5th grade students at Faith Academy meet for music twice a week. Students learn everything from the fundamentals of sound, to music appreciation, to music literacy to developing musical skills. As they progress through the music program, 4th grade students have the opportunity to put their music knowledge to practice by learning to play the recorder. 5th grade students then develop their skills even further by selecting an instrument to study for the year as they join either 5th Grade Band or 5th Grade Strings. The annual Elementary Christmas Program is the perfect opportunity to display the students’ developing vocal technique and is also a highlight of our year together. Faith Academy is delighted to teach young students the joyous gift of music and the glory and honor it brings our Father!
