ELL Teacher

The Middle School ELL Teacher provides essential support to all students in their assigned division who have been identified as English Language Learners. They will do this through strategies (e.g., pull-out, push-in, intervention) that are approved by the ELL Coordinator and the divisional principal. Their goal is to help ELL students succeed in the school’s academic program and to help them develop the knowledge and skills necessary to function without support.

Essential Duties of the job

  • Work professionally to stay abreast of current philosophy and methods of language acquisition and instruction.
  • Be familiar with benchmarks at each grade level.
  • Be familiar with the WIDA framework and Can Do Descriptors by levels and by grades.
  • Use observations, benchmarks, and WIDA Can Do Descriptors to individually assess each ELL to determine their specific needs. 
  • Create individual goals for each ELL based on data and analysis. 
  • Work with the principal, the ELL Coordinator, and teachers to develop suitable instructional materials and strategies to help each student meet his/her goals.  
  • Continuously assess students to monitor their progress and develop appropriate strategies based on their progress. 
  • Observe and give appropriate support during push-ins.
  • Work with classroom teachers to support teaching practices for ELLs. 
  • Communicate with principals, teachers, and parents regarding ELL students’ progress as well as any concerns as they arise.
  • Work with ELL aides to train them in classroom responsibilities and expectations.
  • Attend meetings with parents of ELLs to build unity and understanding.

Additional responsibilities

  • Follow the direction of the ELL Coordinator and work with him/her to maintain best practices in the school’s ELL program.
  • Be a role model to students through personal presentation and professional conduct.
  • Arrive in class, on or before the start of the lesson, and begin and end lessons on time.
  • Cover for absent colleagues as is reasonable, fair and equitable.
  • Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues and staff.
  • Be involved in enrichment activities, after school clubs and visits.
  • Liaise effectively with parents/carers and with other agencies with responsibility for students’ education and welfare.
  • In conjunction with the principal and curriculum director, take responsibility for personal professional development, keeping up-to-date with research and developments in teaching pedagogy and changes in the curriculum, which may lead to improvements in teaching and learning.
  • Undertake any necessary professional development as identified in the Faith Academy Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP) taking full advantage of any relevant training and development available.
  • Carry out reflective practice exercises to move classroom practice, teaching and learning, forward.

Job specifications

  • Hold at least a BA that includes significant coursework in language acquisition skills and/or grammar and vocabulary instruction.
  • Hold teaching credentials appropriate for the division to which he/she is assigned. (preferred)
  • TESOL certificate. (preferred)
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with ELLs, either as an aide or as a teacher. (preferred)
