Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extracurricular activity meant to simulate the United Nations. It allows students to broaden their worldview by debating current world issues and trying to find sustainable solutions to these problems. It involves substantial researching, public speaking, debating, writing, and critical thinking, in addition to diplomacy and leadership.
Length of Activity
Meetings are every Thursday, from 2:40 to 4:00 pm. The club starts meeting the week after the High School retreat, and continues until March of the next year.
Expectations for Participants
Attendance is required for every meeting. If a delegate is not able to participate that day, the delegate should inform their officers before the meeting starts.
Non-Negotiable Qualifications for Participants
Challenges, Sacrifices, and Time Commitment
MUN is a weekly commitment, and delegates are highly encouraged to research on the debate topic before each meeting. Delegates are also encouraged to speak up and participate so they can grow in areas of public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership. If there is a fundraising event, delegates are required to help raise the money by planning the event and participating in the fundraiser.
MUN Orientation at Brent (for new delegates), MUN Locals, and MUNA Conference at Philippines WHO center.
Students will have to pay their own participation fees for the major events listed above. Depending on the situation, students might also be asked to contribute in paying for any transportation fees.
