Special Education

Targeted areas of concern for students:

• Organizational skills
• Study skills
• Test taking skills
• Tutoring
• Independent instruction, based on needs identified with an IEP 

Learning Center Teachers should be in close communication with the Middle School Counselor and the Educational Support Services Coordinator.  All referrals and requests for testing should go through the Counselor and the Educational Support Services Coordinator.

Specific ideas that are being developed or are in operation at the present time that could be facilitated by a Learning Center Teacher:

• Using a student’s educational testing and ESSP (Educational Student Support Plan), construct and teach individualized courses for learning disabled students in the areas of math and English (though others could be added in the future).
• Coordinate and assist the teaching of study skills for all diagnosed middle school students.
• Work individually with students on the areas of concern listed above.
• Assist teachers in modifying and accommodating lessons and assessments for students that have been diagnosed with learning disabilities but are mainstreamed for that particular subject(s).
• Recommend testing.  Some tests used for diagnosis may be administered by guidance counselors, certified special education teachers, NILD specialists, or other qualified professionals such as our Family Counselors.
• Be available as a resource person for classroom teachers and parents.
