String Teacher (Grade 5-7)

The Beginning String Teacher teaches beginning students in Grade 5-7 to play violin, viola, and cello  while building a strong foundation in music literacy, basic playing technique, and ensemble skills. This position focuses on helping students develop a lifelong appreciation for music through positive, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences.

The teacher/director leads the school’s beginning string program, guiding students as they learn fundamental performance skills and preparing them to continue successfully in intermediate and advanced orchestra classes. Collaboration with other music teachers is an important part of the role to ensure that students experience a well-coordinated and sequential music program across all grade levels.

Essential Duties of the job

  • Teach grades 5–7 beginning and intermediate strings and assist with advanced string students in grades 7–12.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons that build musical and technical skills.
  • Direct student rehearsals and performances such as concerts and school events (ACSC Honor Orchestra).
  • Encourage student participation and help grow the string program.
  • Maintain instruments, music, and classroom materials.
  • Create a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Work with other music teachers to ensure program continuity across grade levels.
  • Participate in professional development and school activities.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field
  •  Teaching Certificate in Music (Instrumental emphasis)

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Experience teaching string instruments to elementary or middle school students
  • Experience directing ensembles or assisting with orchestras (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of string pedagogy and basic music theory
  • Ability to teach violin, viola, and cello, at beginning/intermediate levels
  • Classroom management and rehearsal/conducting skills
  • Organizational and communication skills
